Spreckels and took 12 years to complete due to a multitude of logistical issues, flu deaths, extreme weather events and World War I. The railway stretched 148 miles from San Diego to El Centro and provided a connection to the transcontinental Southern Pacific Railroad. The line remains partially in use by freight carriers and vintage trains.According to museum officials, the anniversary celebration will include free lectures, traveling exhibits, special events with other historical organizations and screenings of silent movies showing parts of the San Diego and Arizona Railway. All activities throughout the year are prelude to a reenactment ceremony of Spreckels accidentally bending the final railroad spike at Campo Railroad Park on Nov. 16, 2019.“We’re very excited about kicking-off our yearlong celebration and the leading up to the 100 anniversary of the country’s final transcontinental railroad,’ said museum President Diana Hyatt. “We invite all San Diego residents to join the celebration.”Residents can book free lectures by museum volunteers, loans of a traveling museum exhibit and learn more about the centennial celebration of the San Diego and Arizona Railway at psrm.org.
