  • 9-1-1 call “lost” in death of Tumbler Ridge man

first_imgHe was found unconscious and taken to the clinic more than eight hours after he left home, but was unable to be revived. His wife Faye noticed the next day that he had made a 30 second call to 9-1-1 that afternoon, which the RCMP dispatch centre confirms was answered, but where it went after that is unknown. However, police told the newspaper that the call was not dropped, meaning it was likely being transferred to B.C. Ambulance when it was lost. BCAS can’t say yet whether it received the call or not, and the incident is now being investigated. – Advertisement -Faye Mease is quoted as saying she believes her husband would still be alive if emergency services had been deployed, and wants to sue whoever is responsible, arguing it was hypothermia that killed him, not the heart attack. To read the full Tumbler Ridge News article, click here.Advertisementlast_img read more

  • Virat Kohli will finish as one of the best players of all time: Ross Taylor to India Today

first_imgHe is one of the big achievers as well as newsmakers to come from New Zealand for a career now spanning more than a decade.Despite making news for losing captaincy to former skipper Brendon McCullum and sharing an uncomfortable relationship with coach Mike Hesson, many overlook the fact that Ross Taylor averages 45 in both limited overs and Test cricket. Its no mean feat for underachieving Black Caps outfits over the years. The 33-year-old middle order star has played for four franchises in the IPL including Royal Challengers Bangalore, at a time when Virat Kohli wasn’t the standout player he is today.Taylor in an exclusive interview to India Today opens up on Virat’s transformation from a young batting star to being one of the world’s best. He also candidly admits New Zealand will have to be at their very best to just compete against the current Indian limited overs outfit in the upcoming series. Excerpts…Q. It’s festive season in India these days. Do you think New Zealand can spoil the Indian party?A. You try to win everything you play. But we know it will be tough. We play them a lot but India is always very good at home. We will have to be at our best to compete.Q. I have always wondered what it is like for a Kiwi to play in India against India. Must be quite lonely unlike in the IPL where you have enough support home and away..A. India is a unique place to play and a place I have always enjoyed. Indian crowds are knowledgeable and they love the game. Players have had enough IPL games now to have a following. I have played for four different teams. The Indian crowds will try their best to enjoy good cricket.advertisementQ. It must feel good to get some runs under your belt with the hundred you got in the practice game..A. Practice game or whatever, it’s good to spend some time out there. Its been quite cold back home and to come in the heat and humidity here has affected the players a little bit. But hopefully the two hit outs will prepare us well. Wankhede is a lovely stadium to play cricket in and the team is looking forward to that.Q. You will play some high quality spin in the one day series. Particularly the way the Indian wrist spinners got going against Australia, last?A. Anytime you play India, spin will be a big factor. The way they play our spinners and the way we have to combat their spin. We have had a good hit out. Nadeem and Karn Sharma also put us under pressure at numerous times and the way we go against spin, will go a long way in knowing how we go in this series.Q. The team would have kept an eye on the India Australia series..A. You need to. But a lot of time you play here, the conditions vary from city to city. Some will turn a little bit and some will turn from ball one. We will have to assess and play according.Q. For India its not spin alone that’s doing well. Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah with the new ball and at the death and Hardik Pandya to support makes a impressive attack here..A. The whole balance of the Indian side is impressive. Fast bowlers with Bhuvi swinging it early and also Bumrah. Hardik is turning himself into a world class all rounder. We know we have to be at top of our game. Their batting line up as well, our bowlers will have to be at their best. But it was a good series here last time, we lost 3-2. We have fond memories here and hopefully we can get one better.Q. You have never been shy of playing the horizontal bat shot. You would want to use the slog sweep against spin?A. I made a name for myself playing the slog sweep in IPL for Bangalore. It may not be my best shot. In saying that when it comes off and goes for a six, it’s enjoyable. Fingers crossed it works.Q. You played with Virat Kohli for RCB at the start of the IPL. What’s your take on his transformation from where he was just another batsman to being one of the best today?A. Look I have enjoyed watching Virat grow and have followed his progress from the young player of 2008 for RCB to the player he is now. Him and Williamson are very similar. Batsmen who ask questions at a very young age and you can see the class at very young age.advertisementTo see him where he is today and the consistency he has and now with the added responsibility of captaining the country that he has taken with both hands. I am sure for the next however long he wants to play, he will be one of the best players of all time to have played the game. Which is high praise for a player of his age.Q. One thing that’s hasn’t changed about him is his attitude and aggression..A. At the end of the day, when you play the game you have to be true to yourself. And I love his aggression which rubs off on other players and as opposition you know you are in a contest when you play against him. I don’t think it will change with Virat until the time he does retire. He is a fantastic player to watch and one has to be always competitive against him.Q. Talking about you, it would feel good to have someone like Kane Williamson coming alone to take the pressure of you. You were the captain a few years ago and had a lot on your plate..A. In a way for me it’s now trying to take as much responsibility off Kane . He is a world class player in his own right and captain ship can sometimes affect players. So myself Guptill and Latham have to try and take pressure of Kane so he can do his main skill and score runs and win games for us.Q. Is the team confident they can pull off anything special in this short one day and T20 series? Any predictions? A. You don’t make too many predictions against India. We know we will have to be at our best to compete. If we can master our skills and execute our game plans we can hopefully put this very good Indian side under some pressure and you never know from there.Q.  Let’s close this with some quick-fire t20 questions. I will throw in some names and wait for your response..A. Martin Crowe — mentor and a massive influenceMartin Guptill  — a good friend and team mate. He just needs a hair cut, it’s too bright for me.Brendon McCullum — swashbuckling opener, a very good captain and has taken his team forward. Just speaks too much sometimes.Mike Hesson — short and very good coach. played a big part in evolution of this side.IPL — Great to be a part of and thoroughly enjoyed being part of four different sides.Retirement — not far away.last_img read more
