  • Tasmanian tour operators make green pledge

first_imgOver 70 per cent of Tasmania’s tour operators have signed onto a new destination program aimed at promoting Tasmania as the world’s ecological holiday destination. The program, Earthcheck Evaluate has been developed with the state’s environmental certification program Earthcheck and will help the 711 operators to measure their environmental performance against a global benchmark.Operators will be able to use the standards to improve their energy efficiency and reduce waste whilst safeguarding Tasmania’s heritage. The Tourism Industry Council Tasmania (TICT) first developed the program.TICT chief executive Luke Martin said that Tasmania is the first state in the country to recognise a wholesale approach to sustainability, one that encompasses the full gamut of tourism professionals, from hoteliers to tour operators.“Tourism is worth $2.4 billion annually to the Tasmanian economy and employs 28,000 Tasmanians which makes it the second largest contributor to employment in the state,” Mr Martin said.“In the past three years, visitation to Tasmania has increased by six percent, almost double the national average,“However, the star performer has been nature-based tourism with a massive 31 percent jump (in three years), proof that first-hand eco-experiences in Tasmania’s UNESCO-listed reserves are what today’s travellers want.”Source = ETB News: Tom Nealelast_img read more
