  • Nigeria captain Mikel reveals father was kidnapped hours before Argentina clash

When he made contact with the kidnappers using that number, a ransom was demanded.Mikel did not tell anyone of his ordeal before the match, as he ‘was told that they would shoot my dad instantly if I reported to the authorities or told anybody’.Mikel’s father, Pa Michael Obi, has since been released after the police got involved, but he is receiving emergency treatment in hospital having claimed he was tortured.This is the second time he has been kidnapped, having gone missing in Jos, Nigeria back in 2011. This time, Obi Sr was taken as he travelled to a funeral along the Makurdi-Enugu road from Jos.Speaking to The Guardian, Mikel said of the ordeal: “I played while my father was in the hands of bandits. I had to suppress the trauma. I took a call four hours before kick-off to tell me what had happened.“I was emotionally distraught and I had to make the decision about whether I was mentally ready to play. I was confused. I did not know what to do but, in the end, I knew that I could not let 180 million Nigerians down. I had to shut it out of my head and go and represent my country first. I could not even inform the coaches or NFF staff and only a very tight circle of my friends knew.   • Tasmanian tour operators make green pledge

    first_imgOver 70 per cent of Tasmania’s tour operators have signed onto a new destination program aimed at promoting Tasmania as the world’s ecological holiday destination.The program, Earthcheck Evaluate has been developed with the state’s environmental certification program Earthcheck and will help the 711 operators to measure their environmental performance against a global benchmark.Operators will be able to use the standards to improve their energy efficiency and reduce waste whilst safeguarding Tasmania’s heritage.The Tourism Industry Council Tasmania (TICT) first developed the program.TICT chief executive Luke Martin said that Tasmania is the first state in the country to recognise a wholesale approach to sustainability, one that encompasses the full gamut of tourism professionals, from hoteliers to tour operators.“Tourism is worth $2.4 billion annually to the Tasmanian economy and employs 28,000 Tasmanians which makes it the second largest contributor to employment in the state,” Mr Martin said.“In the past three years, visitation to Tasmania has increased by six percent, almost double the national average,“However, the star performer has been nature-based tourism with a massive 31 percent jump (in three years), proof that first-hand eco-experiences in Tasmania’s UNESCO-listed reserves are what today’s travellers want.”Source = ETB News: Tom Nealelast_img read more
