  • Son double leads Spurs to victory

first_imgTottenham 2 Huddersfield Town 0: Son double helps Spurs warm up for Juventus Joe Wright Last updated 1 year ago 00:53 3/4/18 son heung-min - cropped Getty Images Tottenham kept their top-four chase on track with a routine 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town, just four days before they host Juventus. Two goals from Son Heung-min gave Tottenham a comfortable 2-0 Premier League win over Huddersfield Town on Saturday. The South Korea international struck in each half to give the home side all three points at Wembley and move them into third in the table, at least temporarily.Spurs, who have won their last seven games against Huddersfield in all competitions and are unbeaten in 34 league meetings with promoted teams, rarely looked troubled against a visiting side who lost the reverse fixture 4-0 in September. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Lyon treble & England heartbreak: The full story behind Lucy Bronze’s dramatic 2019 Liverpool v Man City is now the league’s biggest rivalry and the bitterness is growing Megan Rapinoe: Born & brilliant in the U.S.A. A Liverpool legend in the making: Behind Virgil van Dijk’s remarkable rise to world’s best player Manager Mauricio Pochettino named a strong team, despite the looming visit of Juventus in the Champions League, and they took full advantage of some early dominance through Son’s stylish finish just before the half-hour mark. The 25-year-old headed in his second after the break to make the win safe, as Spurs climbed a point above Liverpool, who face Newcastle United later on Saturday.Huddersfield, meanwhile, remain just three points outside the relegation zone with nine matches remaining.13 – Son Heung-Min has been directly involved in 13 goals in his last 11 Premier League appearances at Wembley (nine goals, four assists). Arch.— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) March 3, 2018Son was the most dangerous player during Spurs’ control of the ball in the opening 20 minutes, with goalkeeper Jonas Lossl doing well to save at Harry Kane’s feet after one of the former Bayer Leverkusen man’s driving runs down the left.Christian Eriksen stung Lossl’s hands as Spurs pressure began to build, and they finally broke the deadlock 27 minutes in, with Son rounding the goalkeeper before drilling home left-footed after Dele Alli’s pass sent him clean through on goal. pic.twitter.com/0SUazQBVbl— Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) March 3, 2018The visitors were trying to hit on the break but could barely bring the ball out of their own half, such was Spurs’ dominance, and their difficult first 45 minutes was made worse by the loss of both Collin Quaner and Alex Pritchard to injury.Referee Kevin Friend, who had to replace the injured Mike Jones at the start of the match, waved away strong penalty appeals from Son early in the second half after the prostrate Terence Kongolo grabbed at his leg, although the Spurs forward should really have been penalised for being offside.Hugo Lloris saved well from Tom Ince on the break but Huddersfield’s hopes of a point were extinguished 54 minutes in, as Son headed Kane’s bouncing cross from the right beyond the static Lossl and into the net.David Wagner’s side looked resigned to their defeat and Spurs took the chance to rest some key players before Juve’s visit on Wednesday, with Son departing to a standing ovation from the home crowd.Kane had a strangely quiet outing and volleyed a good chance wide in the closing stages, but Pochettino looked largely unconcerned by the miss, with his thoughts now turning to that showdown with the Serie A champions. Key Opta Stats:- Since a 1-4 loss to Manchester City in December, Tottenham have remained unbeaten in 11 Premier League games, winning eight – the longest current run in the division.- Huddersfield have failed to score in 11 Premier League away games this season; more than any other top-flight side.- Only Kane (39) has been involved in more goals for Spurs in all competitions this season than Son (24 – 15 goals, 9 assists). read morelast_img read more

first_imgTexas A&M's Danuel House.Much to the chagrin of most fans, Texas and Texas A&M have not played each other in either football or men’s basketball since the Aggies left the Big 12 for the SEC back in 2012. But at least one members of A&M’s hoops team wants that to change in 2015. Junior guard Danuel House, who has one year of collegiate eligibility remaining, wants a shot at the Longhorns this upcoming season. • Former Quebec engineering executive receives 12month sentence for bidrigging

first_imgOTTAWA — The Competition Bureau says a former executive of Quebec engineering firm Dessau received a 12-month sentence after pleading guilty Thursday in the Court of Quebec to rigging bids for City of Gatineau infrastructure contracts.Dave Boulay, formerly Dessau’s director and assistant vice-president, Outaouais, was sentenced to six months of house arrest and six months under curfew. He admitted to participating in a bid-rigging scheme from 2006 to 2008 in which several engineering firms conspired to divide up city contracts among themselves without the municipality’s knowledge. The regulator says Boulay received leniency in sentencing because of his co-operation with the investigation and the fact that he had no role in the instigation of the bid-rigging scheme.Court proceedings are ongoing against three co-accused: Andre Mathieu, formerly vice-president and associate of Cima+; Claude Marquis, formerly regional director, Outaouais for Genivar (now WSP Global) and Michel Famery, formerly regional vice-president, Dessau.Criminal charges were laid last June against the four men in connection with bid-rigging of 21 Gatineau infrastructure contracts awarded between 2004 and 2008. • US urges Pak to take sustained action against terrorist groups

first_imgWashington DC: Stepping up pressure on Pakistan, the US has asked Islamabad to take “sustained and irreversible” actions against terrorist groups operating from its territory to prevent future attacks and promote regional stability. The State Department statement came as Pakistan, under global pressure after the Pulwama terror attack and India’s air strikes against Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist camp in Balakot in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on February 26, started taking actions against some of the terrorist outfits and their leaders over the past few days. In Islamabad, the Interior Ministry on Thursday announced that a total of 121 members of the proscribed groups have so far been taken into “preventive detention” across Pakistan. State Department Deputy Spokesperson Robert Palladino told reporters at his biweekly news conference on Thursday, “I would say that we, the United States notes these steps and we continue to urge Pakistan to take sustained, irreversible actions against terrorist groups that will prevent future attacks and promote regional stability”. “We reiterate our call for Pakistan to abide by its United Nations Security Council obligations to deny terrorists safe haven and block their entry to funds,” he said. Responding to questions, Palladino refrained from giving a direct answer on the move at the United Nations Security Council to designate JeM chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist. However, he said that the US and its allies in the UN Security Council want to update the UN list of terrorist organisations and leaders. “Our views on Masood Azhar and Jaish-e-Mohammed are well-known. Jaish-e-Mohammed is a United Nations-designated terrorist group that has been responsible for numerous terrorist attacks and is a threat to regional stability. Masood Azhar is the founder and leader of JEM,” Palladino said. Questions on the United Nations Sanctions Committee deliberations are confidential and as such it is not something that the State Department is going to be able to comment on specific matters on the issue, he said. “But we will continue to work with the sanctions committee to ensure that the list is updated and that it is accurate,” Palladino said. At the US Capitol, India’s Ambassador to the US Harsh Vardhan Shringla met Kevin McCarthy, the Republican leader in the House of Representatives and discussed the issue of terrorism. “We must stand strong against acts of terrorism and work together to improve trade between our nations,” the top Republican leader said after the meeting.last_img read more

  • Male actors insecure about playing gay

first_imgMumbai: Filmmaker Onir recently said that male actors in Bollywood are still insecure about playing gay roles. The director said a film based on LGBTQ characters can get a mainstream release but “good actors” avoid such roles. “I have had many narrations with these mainstream male actors and they refused it. The fear of what it can become still holds them. And this is why I really have a lot of respect for all those actors who say yes to these roles,” Onir said at a panel discussion at an event. • Controversial tusker opens Thrissur Pooram thousands witness

first_imgThrissur (Ker): Thousands of people gathered here Sunday to witness the grand opening of the famed Thrissur Pooram, considered as the mother of all temple festivals.’Thechikkottukavu Ramachandran’, the controversial elephant which was earlier denied permission to take part in the festivities by the authorities on health grounds, ‘opened’ the annual festival at the ancient Vadakkumnathan temple here. Marking the ritual heralding of Pooram, Ramachandran, the tallest elephant of the state, pushed open the southern entrance of the shrine amidst thunderous cheers of the people gathered on the temple ground. The Thrissur Pooram falls on May 13 this year. Also Read – 2019 most peaceful festive season for J&K: Jitendra SinghThe main event of the annual ‘pooram’ begins with the 10.5 foot tall elephant pushing open the gate of the temple, with the idol of ‘neithilakkavilamma’ atop it. Police and temple authorities had a tough time in shifting the jumbo from the ground after the rituals, based on the strict instructions by the district authorities. Among the restrictions imposed on the use of the elephant were: It can take part in the ritual only for an hour from 9. 30 am; four mahouts should escort the animal and barricades should be constructed on a 10-metre radius to prevent people from getting closer to the jumbo. Ending four days of uncertainty, Thechikkottukavu Ramachandran was given the conditional nod Saturday to participate in the Thrissur pooram after the animal cleared the fitness test. Also Read – Personal life needs to be respected: Cong on reports of Rahul’s visit abroadThe clearance to the government was given after a team of three veterinarians conducted the medical examination of the 54-year-old elephant. The team had also submitted a report to the Thrissur collector T V Anupama, stating that the elephant was fit to participate in the “vilambaram” ritual as part of ‘pooram’. Since 2014, the elephant has been been performing the ritual and has a big fan following in the state. However, after two persons were killed by the pachyderm during a house-warming celebration in Guruvayur in February this year, the district administration had imposed a ban on its participation in festivals. Thrissur, the state’s cultural capital, is under a thick security cover with 3,500 policemen being deputed on duty.last_img read more
