  • Teen organizes golf tourney

first_imgPALMDALE – Following in the footsteps of a former teammate, Quartz Hill High golf standout Ayla Friga is organizing a golf tournament to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Friga is organizing the tournament for her senior project. Ali Erdman, a former Quartz Hill standout who now plays at the University of California, Riverside, organized a similar event last season benefiting breast-cancer research. Friga said Caine told her how his band became involved in Make-A-Wish, writing and performing a song for a boy who was near death. “The money goes to Make-A-Wish for a child who’s dying so they can still have some happiness,” Friga said. “It helps the families too because they get to remember the good times they had.” Items of note that will be available for auction include an autographed Epiphone electric guitar autographed by Journey and a Samick acoustic guitar autographed by REO Speedwagon and Cheap Trick band members, among other classic rock musicians. “There’s a lot of wonderful charities out there, but when a child is dying and you can help them with their last wish, I can’t think of anything more important,” Tom Friga said. The $100 tournament entry cost includes greens fees, a cart, breakfast, range balls, a raffle ticket and an awards banquet. The Ayla Friga Classic will be held March 11 at Rancho Vista Golf Course. The tournament will start at 8 a.m., and will be followed by a raffle and auction featuring rock and sports memorabilia. The San Jose State-bound Friga felt compelled to raise money for Make-A-Wish after speaking with her uncle Jonathan Caine, a keyboardist for the 1970s and ’80s classic rock band Journey. center_img For information or to sign up for the tournament, call (661) 272-9903, Ext. 112, or (661) 942-9199, or e-mail ladypro13@yahoo.com or afriga89@yahoo.com. gideon.rubin@dailynews.com (661) 267-7802 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
